How to Pay California State Taxes Online: A Complete 2026 Guide

online tax return

California taxpayers have several ways to pay state taxes online. Web Pay allows you to make a payment directly from a checking or savings account without a service fee, while electronic funds withdrawal and credit card payments provide additional options. A MyFTB account can also give you access to payment history, balances, notices, and other account information.

Choosing the right payment method depends on the type of tax you owe, the cost of the payment method, and how you prefer to manage your records.

Which Payment Method Fits Your Situation?

The California Franchise Tax Board (FTB) offers several electronic payment options for individuals and businesses.

Common options include:

  • Web Pay: Pay directly from a checking or savings account without a service fee.
  • Electronic Funds Withdrawal: Schedule a payment electronically when filing an eligible tax return through tax preparation software.
  • Credit Card: Pay through an authorized third-party payment processor, which charges a service fee.
  • MyFTB: Access your account information, review payment history, view notices, and use available online payment features.

If you cannot pay your California tax balance in full, you may also be able to request an installment agreement. Approval requirements and fees can apply, and interest generally continues to accrue on unpaid balances.

Paying Directly From a Bank Account With Web Pay

Web Pay is one of the simplest ways to pay California state taxes online. The FTB allows individuals and businesses to make payments directly from a checking or savings account without charging a service fee.

Web Pay can be used for several types of payments, including:

  • Current-year tax return balances
  • Estimated tax payments
  • Extension payments
  • Bills and other balances due
  • Amended return payments
  • Certain audit-related tax deposits

Sole proprietors should generally use Web Pay Personal rather than the business option. Corporations, partnerships, and limited liability companies generally use the appropriate business payment option.

Web Pay also allows eligible taxpayers to schedule payments in advance. If you need to cancel a scheduled payment, the FTB generally allows cancellation up to two business days before the scheduled payment date.

After making a payment, save the confirmation information for your records. You can also use MyFTB and your bank records to verify that the payment was processed and applied correctly.

How to Make a California Tax Payment With Web Pay

The exact screens may vary depending on the payment type, but the basic process is straightforward:

  1. Go to the California Franchise Tax Board’s Web Pay service.
  2. Select the appropriate individual or business payment option.
  3. Enter the identifying information requested by the FTB.
  4. Select the type of payment you are making.
  5. Choose the correct tax year for the payment.
  6. Enter the payment amount and your checking or savings account information.
  7. Select the payment date.
  8. Carefully review the tax year, payment type, amount, and banking information.
  9. Submit the payment and save or print the confirmation page for your records.

Selecting the correct payment type and tax year is particularly important. The FTB recommends making separate payments for different tax years so payments can be processed and credited accurately.

Credit Card Payments and What They Cost

California also allows taxpayers to make certain payments by credit card through an authorized third-party processor.

Unlike Web Pay, credit card payments carry a service fee. Because the fee increases with the size of the payment, it is worth comparing the convenience of paying by card with the cost before submitting a large tax payment.

For taxpayers trying to manage short-term cash flow, a credit card may provide another payment option. However, the processing fee and any interest charged by the card issuer should be considered before choosing this method.

What Does a MyFTB Account Add?

MyFTB provides online access to your California tax account and can make it easier to manage your tax information throughout the year.

Depending on your account type, MyFTB can allow you to:

  • Review payment history
  • View account balances and tax-year details
  • Review estimated tax payments and credits
  • Access notices and correspondence
  • Update certain account information
  • Make or schedule eligible payments

Individuals registering for MyFTB may be able to activate their account immediately by completing identity verification through TransUnion. They can also choose to receive an activation PIN by mail. Business account registration generally requires a PIN sent by mail.

If you choose the mailed PIN option, make sure the FTB has your current mailing address before registering. The FTB does not forward MyFTB activation PIN letters, even when a mail-forwarding order is active.

Who Is Required to Pay California Taxes Electronically?

Some California taxpayers are subject to mandatory electronic payment rules.

For individuals, mandatory e-pay generally applies once you:

  • Make an estimated tax or extension payment exceeding $20,000, or
  • File an original California tax return showing total tax liability over $80,000.

An important distinction is that the payment that first triggers the mandatory e-pay requirement does not itself have to be made electronically. Once the requirement is triggered, however, subsequent payments generally must be made electronically regardless of the amount, tax type, or taxable year.

Failing to comply with California’s mandatory e-pay requirement can result in a 1% noncompliance penalty. The FTB also provides a waiver process for taxpayers who meet applicable requirements.

Electronic payment options that can satisfy the requirement include Web Pay, electronic funds withdrawal through tax preparation software, and other FTB-approved electronic methods.

What If You Cannot Pay Your California Tax Bill in Full?

Not being able to pay the entire balance does not mean you should ignore the tax bill or filing deadline.

California offers installment agreements for eligible taxpayers who need additional time to pay. An installment agreement generally requires an application and approval, and applicable fees, penalties, and interest may continue while a balance remains unpaid.

It is generally better to address an unpaid balance promptly rather than wait for additional collection notices to arrive.

Avoid Common California Tax Payment Mistakes

Many online payment problems are preventable. Before submitting a California tax payment, double-check:

  • The tax year
  • The payment type
  • The taxpayer or business identification information
  • The payment amount
  • The scheduled payment date
  • The bank account or payment information

For taxpayers making multiple payments, keeping confirmation records organized by tax year can make it easier to reconcile payments when preparing the next return.

If a payment does not appear where expected, reviewing MyFTB, your bank records, and the original payment information can help identify what happened.
